The Independent Police Complaints Commission ("IPCC") wanted to create an online resource for members of the International Network for the Independent Oversight of Policing ("INIOP"), as well as other people and organisations who have an involvement or interest in police oversight.
INIOP is the only organisation within its discipline with a global remit, with most day to day communication amongst members being conducted remotely. As such, the website needed to be the central source of timely and reliable information for the community.
The ability to engender trust and foster good working relationships between members, in order to raise the standards of policing around the world, within a strong, safe and positive community environment, was the key driver in ensuring the website's success.
Our approach to the INIOP website was to create a trusted environment - balancing the need for the site to be credible & authoritarian with being welcoming & approachable.
We provided the platform for INIOP to elegantly manage the depth and breadth of content alongside the varying levels of user access, permissions and privileges required to serve the many and varied user groups.
The INIOP website is easy to use and intuitive, providing INIOP's diverse range of users access to the information they require, as appropriate to their participation in police oversight.
The public areas of the website provide up to date generalist information, with the opportunity for people to join INIOP,. The member and steering group areas of the website ensure safe and secure communication and information sharing between members and will facilitate the development of best practice in police oversight worldwide.
The project was originally commissioned in 2008, but did not launch until 2010 due to limited client resources for collating and creating content. As such, the site was built to conform with WCAG 1.0 , which were the prevailing accessibility guidelines at that time.
